Sunset - Sunset Crater

A sun dog makes an appearance as the sun sets behind Sunset Crater.

And we get a lovely profile of the San Francisco Peaks from the North.

Flagstaff is on the south side of the Mountain.

An amazing sky. So many planes it is difficult to orient to the horizon.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: It was really beautiful that night! Thank you, Harry!

I like the strong diagonals on this from the contrails ro the sun just catching a small part of the mountain. The colours in the second shot are beautiful.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you, Alan - It all just presented itself nicely!
I never knew that was called a sun dog, Elizabeth, so I have once again gotten my education here at SC. smile

That starlight is wonderful and such a great silhouette of the mountains. I can tell how crisp the weather must have been. Great pictures, Elizabeth!!!

Like Ginnie, I have learnt something: "A sun dog or mock sun, formally called a parhelion in meteorology, is an atmospheric optical phenomenon (due to ice crystals) that consists of a bright spot to one or both sides of the sun."

Both pictures are great and hint at the approaching blue hour.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Yes! Well done!! smile
Thank you very much, Louis!
You were there at the right time, Elizabeth. Brilliant images!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: We did purposefully go out late in the afternoon... and we were rewarded with such lovely skies! Thank you, Beverly!
