Funny Face

One of the seventy something goats at the goat farm my brother runs in

Black Mountain, North Carolina.  This is a LaMancha.... they don't have

ear flaps like most goats - which makes them look rather comical.  They

are very social and friendly.  The farm has a high tech milking station, a

pasturization room and a process room for cheeses.  They also sell the

milk to local artisans for soaps and lotions. Some of the goats are bred

to sell as pets or to those wanting to start their own breeding / milking

venture.  Adam tries to screen potential buyers so the goats won't be

used for meat.  This is the boy who told us when he was three that he

would never again eat anything that has a face.  And so he hasn't.

Ah, ah, superbe ! On dirait qu'elle mâche un chewing-gum.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: smile That's true, Martine!!
Oh my, Elizabeth. How can we NOT be amused. smile And yes, that video has to be the best one I've ever seen on the subject!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Isn't she adorable!!!! (the goat)
And, isn't she adorable!!!! (the girl)
She certainly makes an impression.
Funny photo... you're in NC? I wish we could have met.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Hi Larry! We thought about you - but it was a bit of a whirlwind trip - we pent most of our time in Georgia - just going up to South Carolina for a few days over Thanksgiving. One of those days we drove "up the road" (about 90 minutes) to "the farm" just outside Black Mountain from Dad's place near Greenville, SC. So we were quite a bit west from you. Maybe next time!

Now there's a lovely smile smile I used to drink goats milk for a while when seeing if I was intolerant t something in cow's milk. I wonder if the gaot got a more festive necklace for Christmas?
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Isn't it!! smile I like goats milk - and especially goats milk cheese... but animal milk is actually a no-no for my system. I'll have to ask Adam if they got red and green necklaces for the week!

Gave me my first smile of the day, Eizabeth - what a face, and Adam made me think!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Oh I'm so glad, Lisl! Isn't she adorable!
Adam often makes me think... He's brilliant - actually testing with a very high IQ, and he has a Masters' degree in creative writing. He has difficulty in very social situations, and loves animals, so when this job opened up very close to his rural home - he thought he'd try it out. Turns out he's turned a losing business plan (or complete lack of business plan, as it were), into a profitable business. And he just loves it! His partner, Jon, once said he was sorry Adam wasn't using his degree, and Adam replied that he wasn't sorry! He's really enjoying the animals, and the very physical work that comes with keeping the roads graded and the pens in good shape - which he may only be able to do until he's maybe 50 years old... "I can write until I'm 100 - so there's time!"

Wow, Elizabeth, what a story and what a great funny face this is, they can be very happy that they are at your brothers farm!! Do you notice the black in the eye, that is horizontal as for a cat that is vertical...
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you, Astrid! They are super happy critters!
Consensus seems to believe that pupil shape and orientation depends on whether you are the hunter or the hunted... Humans and cats have round / oval pupils to allow vision in various lighting conditions, with cats eyes being able to become vertical slits - to the point of almost closing, for the most acute vision in bright light, directly ahead of them where they are going to be laser focused on their prey. Goats are grazers, and prey - so their eyes allow a wide field of vision - yet without actually letting a lot of direct light from above while grazing.

I laughed when I saw this

I'm not sure you've ever mentioned your veggie brother before..
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Oh I'm so glad!

Adam is actually my step brother - and is only a year older than my daughter. Because he lives nearly 2000 miles away, I don't see him as often as I'd like. But, truth be told - I favor my step siblings more than my blood siblings. I've just always gotten along better with them!

Without the ear flaps, this goat does look strange/funny. Tell Adam he mustn't sell me a goat. The last one I bought, got eaten. That happened during my service days. We have been marching/hiking for almost a week and lived what you could carry. Stocks got low and bland, so we collected the price of a goat among us and bought one from a local.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Doesn't she!
I will certainly tell Adam not to sell to you!
But we do what we have to under certain circumstances. I doubt he would judge you...

She reminds me of a lady I know.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: smile Oh dear! I hope in a good way!
What a cute little goat. Our Helen has been a Vegetarian since she was 12 but to do it from the age of three is amazing!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: They were all so funny! Good for Helen! Adam is brilliant - actually having been tested with a very high IQ. So he's been thinking harder, and at an earlier age than most of us! Certainly not a failing on our part... he's just extraordinary in a few ways we're not. We all have our thing!

A very funny face.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Very comical, I thought!
Now, there is a beauty!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Isn't she just!!
It does look rather strange without the side bits.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Yes - it's a bit startling at first... but you get used to it!
What a cute face! I do not eat meat or poultry. This child has the right idea.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Isn't she adorable! Yes, Ruthie... as do you!

Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Isn't she cute! You're welcome, Beth - and thank you!
That is a funny face - good to see that your brother runs an excellent farm.
