Let's Go Down to the River...

We'll spend a little time at Lees Ferry... how 'bout it?

Lees Ferry is the only place within Glen Canyon / Grand Canyon

area where you can drive up to the Colorado River in over 700

miles of canyon country, right up to the first rapid in the Grand Canyon.

This "rapid" is called "The Riffles", and as you can see, it's not

too tretcherous... but just rough enough to be called a rapid.  This

is where Frank and I like to dip our toes in the water after a long

hike on a hot day. It's so fun watching the river adventurers setting

off in their first mile, and fly fisherman testing their lines. This guy

caught a "sucker" - a bottom feeder - that was a lovely orange color

and nearly two feet in length.  He showed it to us, and gently let it go.

Excellent series of pics, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thanks, Ray! It was so fun photographing him - trying to catch the light off his line!

C'est sûr, il a attrapé quelque chose sur la première photo, mais quoi...
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: smile It was what he called a "sucker"... a bottom feeder. So he let it go!
Fabulous series of shots, indeed, Elizabeth. I can just imagine the thrill of people-watching at that spot!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you very much, Ginnie! We stay for hours!! smile
All these shots are great, Elizabeth, but the main one is a cracker! Perfect timing...We'll not mention my disasters on this day....:-(
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thanks so much, Frank!

Having seen several TV programmes about going down through the Canyon's rapids it is definitely not for me. I'd like the adrenalin rush but not the crushing against the rocks when it goes wrong! A cracking set of images of the angler., especially the middle one.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: smile Oh that's rare, Alan! C'mon!! Give it a try! smile
Thank you - we had a lot of fun photographing him!

Impressive photos of his fly technique. I could never do it properly.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you, Mike! It was such a pleasure to watch!
Now that's my kind of sporting pastime.Dream on .
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: smile Never to late to learn...
Very nice shots. I can't believe the thickness of this fellow's line. I think he was expecting to catch a whale.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: I don't know enough about fly fishing to comment... Would it have anything to do with the roughness of the water?
he seems to be moving progressively int deeper waters, Elizabeth
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: He didn't venture out much farther than this... there are two shelves on this side of the river, and it seemed he got his toes to the edge of one and stopped!
The first shot and the fourth especially are really great as far as I'm concerned, the other two, well they fall into the pretty good category.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thanks so much, Brian! I particularly liked the top image because of the raft being framed by his line!

i just love his moves and your shots....petersmile
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thanks so much, Peter!
I don't know enough about fly fishing, but enjoyed watching his graceful moves and the way the line would arc and swirl and go exactly where he wanted it!
Great shot, Elizabeth!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you, Tom!
I like the stains on the rock...
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Makes a lovely patina, doesn't it!
