Dia De Los Muertos

A Week Of Images

Celebrating the Day of the Dead

A holiday typically celebrated November 1st, Dia de los Muertos celebrates the lives of those who have gone before us.  It is believed that the dead would be insulted if we were to be mournful in their remembrance - so we are to celebrate with food, music, dance and parties... things they would have enjoyed.  On Dia de los Muertos, the dead are also a part of the community, awakened from their eternal sleep to share celebrations with their loved ones.  And so you will see people dressed as calacas (skeletons) or wearing calavera (skull) masks... portraying the dead brought to life.  They will be dancing about happily, enjoying themselves, often in fancy clothes - posing and entertaining.  Calacas and calaveras appear everywhere during the holiday: as dolls, in paintings, even as candies.  There's nothing creepy about it... it's joyful and beautiful and so much fun!
