Dancing 4 of 10

A little series featuring

my favorite subject...

Halau Hula Napuaokalei'ilima

Heritage Square

Flagstaff, Arizona

August 29, 2014

Kumu Hula (master hula teacher) Kehau Chrisman explained that

traditional Hula dancing is a communication tool used by the Hawaiian

people to communicate with each other, and people who do not speak

their native language.  Each dance tells a story, often historical, and

the movemements have been passed down through many generations.

"Hula is the art of Hawaiian dance, expressing all we see,
hear, smell, taste, touch and feel."
~ Aunti Maiki Aiu Lake
(1925-1984)

This looks so friendly and inviting, Elizabeth
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: It truly was, Lisl. Kehau Chrisman would explain the meaning of each dance prior to the performance. Each dance tells a story... many of them were an effort by islanders to communicate with their visitors a sense of welcome.
