Los TexManiacs

This Weeks' Series...

Max Baca is a legend on the bajo sexto, a twelve string guitar-like instrument,

which customarily provides rhythm accompaniment for the button accordion,

thus creating the core of the Tex / Mex Conjunto sound.  Having played with

Grammy Award winning Flaco Jimenez, he gained the experience and notariety

to record with the original Texas Tornados, Los Super Seven and even the Rolling Stones.

It was a real treat that Los TexManiacs were touring with

A Prairie Home Companion when they came to Flagstaff last May.

They didn't video tape the entire show.

But, I found this YouTube of Los TexManiacs performing Down In The Barrio...

which is what they were playing when I took this photo.

And YES, Annette and I were dancing every second...

so I'm happy to have gotten a half decent shot!   :-)

Well fed Lads, heh!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Have you ever had Tex-Mex food? Impossible to stay skinny on that stuff... and Mexican's, like Italians, feed you when they love you! It's just a thing!

I just had to listen to the sound of a bajo sexto. Lovely - you just have to get itchy feet. Funny thing is that I have heard the sound before, but never knew what it was. So thanks for that.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: It is lovely - isn't it!
No sitting still with this stuff playing!
I'm so happy to be of service!
It has a nice twangy low pitch sound.

Good picture E

Looks like a swell time being had by all Elizabeth.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Absolutely!
One of my favorite musicians is a Baca - Susana Baca from Peru. Must be in the Baca genes.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: I looked her up - what a lovely voice!!!
Brilliant music on the video, I will download it as an MP3 later on, the guitar has a great sound and there's some excellent harmonica in there somewhere I think. best one of the week so far.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: I can't tell you how pleased I am that you enjoy this music! Thank you!
unusual instruments to my eyes, i really liked this post, so thank you, Elizabeth
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: I imagine they're a bit different from what you might be used to!
Good to see live music, I've not heard of the Bajo Sexto before, quite a metallic sound. Good capture and interesting post Elizabeth
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: It is a little different sound than the regular guitar... maybe more like a steel guitar? I don't know. Thanks John!
So much fun Elizabeth... great music too
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you Aderonke - they are great fun for sure!
