Still Ropin'

Last summer I was honored when my buddy, Wayne Kocisco, invited me to photograph Billy Bob Lane's 90th Birthday Team Roping Competition.  Billy Bob is a typical cowboy - he can hardly walk, but even at 90 years old... you get him on a horse and he can do just about anything.  These cowboys and cowgirls love nothing in the world more than riding and roping.  We all were having so much fun - we almost forgot to eat lunch... they just kept signing up for more and more rotations!  This series has been a long time in the making - as I took over a thousand shots, and had such little time to process them.  But, it was important to me that I show well, the friendship, strength, talent and joy they all share.

And I'd like to dedicate this series to the memory of Travis Shiew.  I couldn't take a bad photo of Travis.  I just couldn't- not that I tried to take a bad pic - but you know, you expect to get at least one shot of a guy with his tongue out, or his hand in front of his face...  Not Travis.  He looked perfect and handsome in every shot.  My gratitude and love to his family (Jim, Duree, Jada and Chelsea, whom you will also see roping in these photos)  for granting me permission to post these pictures.

This is a wonderful collage that shows off a very special day. You did an excellent job balancing the photos to tell the story.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you Beth! It was Frank's idea to kick off the series with a montage!

Billy Bob Lane' will be proud of what you did capturing the spirit of his celebration the love and fellowship in this collage Elizabeth... the good one's take time to create....petersmile
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: I had made a web album for them, and am told Billy Bob looks at it over and over. Months ago he started asking Wayne if we were going to do another round this July... how can you refuse a man that simple request?! With the blessing of Travis' family ("Travis would want you to do this"wink - plans are afoot.

You,ve done an outstanding job there Elizabeth smile
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thanks Shane! Had had a blast with these amazing people!
A little bit of Sam Elliott in him, Elizabeth? That alone would be worth seeing! Congratulations on the invitation!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: smile I think that too! That's actually Wayne with his grandson. Billy Bob is the one flanked on either side by ladies... They'd finally talked him into getting off his horse to cut the cake!
Thank you! It truly was an honor!

This looks like cowboy land to me Elizabeth, just like I used to see in those grainy black and white tv shows.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Oh you've no idea! These people are the real deal - even when they choose to wear a baseball cap instead of a stetson- it's in their blood!
Excellent work Elizabeth, I look forward to more.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you Scotia! I hope not to disappoint!
I will look forward, Elizabeth
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Oh goody! I hope you'll enjoy them!
They will be delighted with this E.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: I don't think anyone had really photographed them before - so it was great fun!

It is a world on its own - fine that you are displaying this strange world to us we know mostly only from some films.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Unique to the American west!
Very home on the range, a great opportunity for shots and love the details.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Yes, very much so! I'd never really photographed "sport" or action before, so it was a fun challenge! Thanks John !
This should be very good. I love looking at horses. Very nice presentation.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: You've taken such beautiful photos of horses! I do hope you'll enjoy this series. Thank you Mary!
What a fabulous all-american montage!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: All American- it is that! Thanks Sarah!
cool collage for impression
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you Chantal!
What a fine collage to start this series, a pastime that we folks over here know almost nothing about.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you Brian! I hope you'll learn a little something then!

A thousand shots.... so enough for the next three years almost wink Mind you, if you're like me, there will be 1000 shots with around 10 keepers smile Good to see the skill of horsemanship being kept alive.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Well - I didn't say I KEPT all 1000! smile Many have wound up in the trash, I assure you! It'll be a cold day in h*?% that cowboy horsemanship disappears. It's a way of life, even if few actually make a living at it anymore.

It must be something in the air out there - he doesn't look older than 60. Lovely collage of photos.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Well, Mike.... it's a dry heat... we tend to be rather well preserved in this arid climate! smile
Great montage, Elizabeth, I look forward to seeing these on s/c, at last! You did good girl. It will make a fine tribute to Travis. R.I.P.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you Frank - I appreciate your suggestion and assistance, as always!!!
I hope I will do justice to Travis' memory.
A wonderful collection here Elizabeth! Well done.
