Cool Day in a Sweat House

We were awed by the beautiful construction of a traditional Native American sweat lodge.

Monument Valley

Arizona / Utah

Baby I'm not movin' on.... I'll love you long after your gone

Like a drum my heart never stops beating for you

Young Frankie looks like he'd rather be having a cuddle, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Well he probably would - not sayin' he didn't get one! smile
i am amazed with the way that they interlock the timbers for the roof Elizabeth... if i was standing there... i would have the same look of wonder on my face that Frank had....petersmile
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: It was so beautiful, Peter! I loved being in there - I think I took 20 shots of the wood - it was such a warm color!

He does look taken in by the whole scene
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: As was I - but I couldn't help but capture him there!

A terrific image Elizabeth. Do people still use it, I mean get their kit off and sweat inside this thing?
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thanks Chris! This particular one is mostly for display and demonstration. It had been recently used, as there were ashes in the wood stove, and some fresh juniper wood by the door.

I would love to try one!

Frank, camera in hand seems unsure were to start.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: It's good for you!!!!
Yes- though it was all just wood - it was fun trying to find the right composition to present it!
Frank is thinking as he does sometimes is this F8 or F5.6.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: smile I'm sure you're right!

He looks "short of eyes," Elizabeth! I would be, too, I know.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: So true - although it was just a wooden structure, the patterns were really beautiful!

That is some fabulous construction there, Great shot. Who is that cool dude in the picture grin smile (I would take him home if I were you....)
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: It was amazing how well put together they are. They just look like mud huts from the outside!
He is quite a cool dude, isn't he! I did, in fact bring him home! smile
I googled sweat lodges as I had not heard of them and they are very interesting. Young Frank is clearly impressed
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Oh yes - it's so good for you.... I mean, depending on how much peyote you smoke! smile
Very different construction
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Isn't it lovely! And on the outside it's all just plastered in mud!

What an incredible construction. I like the interlocking timbers and your man helps show the size of the timbers.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: It is amazing. The outside is covered in mud. I was impressed with the size of the logs as well! He's good for a lot of things...

Now that I see him like this, I get the feeling he is lucky to have you as companion. [heh, heh]
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Ah - we're both pretty lucky, Louis! smile
Awestruck was my first thought, on Frank's expression. This is a fine shot Elizabeth, love the warmth smile
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Yup! smile Thanks Martin - it was a very warm atmosphere!
What an awesome building. Was it cedar by any chance?
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Isn't it wonderful! Most likely Pinyon Pine or Ponderosa.
Those trousers want ironing....smile It was an amazing place, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Nah - they look fine! Rugged! smile
I love wooden textures
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Me too - and the warmth of the color of wood
It looks as if they built this one to last, Elizabeth; incredible construction. No wonder you & Frank were in awe.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: I think so! The outside is plastered in mud.
Wow, that's some building, Elizabeth. Love the music.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Isn't it wonderful! I love that song - the lyrics are just perfect!
Trully amazing Elizabeth...love the lights coming through!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thanks Ronky! The light was very nice coming through the hole in the top!
That roof is really a very clever construction, is this some sort of sauna type thing? Frank looks somewhat overawed by the whole thing.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Sweat lodges are very much like saunas, but with a spiritual purpose. Add a little peyote to the heat and you'll have a wonderful hallucinogenic experience!
What a great construction, the wood must have kept it warm. Frank could have made more effort though with feathers and costume, but I suppose that's men for you smile
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Yes- I believe they choose the wood carefully.
I told him...

Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Indeed!! smile
Fabulous capture Elizabeth! Light and textures are amazing.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thanks Richard! B the wood was such a lovely color!
Great photo of frank elizabeth .....that construction is amazing
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you Shane! The build of these sweat lodges was beautiful!

Some one looks a little dubious about something
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Well you never know what mischief he's gotten into!
