Hopi Butterfly Dance

Hopi Festival, Museum of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff

The costumes are very elaborate- each piece having meaning.  The ceremonial outfits have been passed down through generations.  Although much care is given to preserving them, some things will need to be replaced with more modern materials.  the beautiful turqoise & silver jewelry is the one thing that doesn't break down - and is often several generations old.

A lovely expression on her face...
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: They all take it very seriously, and do not smile through the performance... but afterwords, their happiness shines gloriously!

that is a beautiful headdress
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Isn't it lovely - The girls all had rainbows on their head - one of many revered symbols.
Very nice Elizabeth, I like the jumble of colours in the bottom shot.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you, Frank!
I loved how the costume is so abstract looking from this angle... only the human arm gives it away!

Fascinating stuff Elizabeth, when all of their apparel has meaning
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: We spoke with a young man who was one of the artists displaying his work... the painting, to my eye, looked very busy - until he explained what everything meant and how everything was interlinked to give an even deeper meaning. It was beautiful!

Beautiful! The skill in making these is incredible.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: It's really wonderful to see!
It is good to see the traditions are living on E
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: I agree... I especially appreciate how many young Hopi & Navajo are speaking their native language. There was a time in the 1800's & early 1900's when white man did not allow them to - and even made them adopt "Christian" names.

What a terrific outfit.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Wonderful, isn't it!
There's so much to look at in these ceremonial robes, I suspect they must be quite heavy to wear. [I suddenly realised when we were out on Saturday we have a Flagstaff about 15 minutes from us, it includes this place https://www.brewersfayre.co.uk/pub-restaurant/Leicestershire/Flagstaff-Island-Ashby-de-la-Zouch.html plus a hotel and other roadside facilities, I can't discover why it was named as Flagstaff though.]
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Yes - heavy and HOT!
Well that's a little strange... I've Googled it and kind find an origin for the name... Huh!
Fantastic character portrait
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you very much, Ruthie!
An interesting event - I recall stopping at a stand by the roadside on my visit to the Grand Canyon - and buying a bit of that silver smile
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: It's always a lot of fun!
Oh yes - I've lost many dollars at those roadside stalls! smile
