Roadrunner!

These cool kids are in the Cuckoo family...  They've been clocked up to 20 miles an hour when pursuing their prey, but will often take to flight if escraping a predator.  They are omnivores with a varied diet from insects, spiders, lizards and snakes to small mammals - but they'll also eat the fruit and seeds of many desert plants.  They either live alone or with a life mate- with whom they may hold a specific territory year round.

And this guy is just awesome, a Western Fence Lizard who's apparently

escaped becoming someone elses dinner more than once:

Le lézard a une queue bizarre.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Yep! It happens sometimes when the tail has been detached more than once - it can grow back in funny ways!

Two interesting natural history subjects, today, Elizabeth. I am very impressed with the abilities (and diet) of the Roadrunner
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thanks, Lisl! The Roadrunner is a fascinating creature!

Amazing birds these Roadrunners, we have nothing like them here in the UK
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: They are! It doesn't get warm enough there! smile

The roadrunner featured in an early children's TV cartoon series. I can recall they red mountains and the bird hurling along going "Beep! Beep!". We have some funning little wading birds that love the edge of the sea and their legs seem to be going 500 miles an hour when the waves come in and out. Nothing like the speed of the roadrunner in reality, of course.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: That's right - always foiling Wylie Coyote!
I do imaging your wading birds are great fun to watch, though!
Je decouvre cet oiseau , son plumage est très beau
J'adore les lezards ...
Bonne journée Elisabeth
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: He's an interesting character isn't he!
I love lizards, too!
Thanks, Claudine - Happy Wednesday do you!
After years of seeing the cartoon this is the first time I have actually seen one!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Isn't he wonderful!
He does ave that lean athletic look
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: You should see him run... he leans forward and becomes aerodynamic like a stealth bomber!

They have an aerodynamic look about their shape.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Yes - you should see him run! He leans way forward and becomes even more aerodynamic - like a stealth bomber!
Great shot, Elizabeth - I only managed to see this bird once in 1971 when passing through New Mexico.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thanks, Tom! Well that's fitting - as the Roadrunner is New Mexico's state bird!
Can any North American not laugh at seeing a roadrunner? Will you have a coyote tomorrow?
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: I just love them! I wish I did!

Like Bill, I have only seen this as a cartoon, thank you for showing me what a real one looks like!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Pretty, aren't they!
Hey, is it "Beep Bip" where he left the coyote? Really equipped the lizard with the corkscrew. smile
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Yep! The lizard has a great tail!
I will refrain from obvious meep! meep! comments.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: smile meep! meep! back to you!
Strangely enough I ran a quiz at camera club last night and one of the answers was Roadrunner. Now although I wouldn't hold it I don't mind little characters like the one in the lower picture at all.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: That IS strange, Brian! What was the question???
