Local Wildlife

This week some photos from the Grand Canyon's South Rim.

To be followed next week by images from the North Rim.

Very different environments, and a very different experience.

I can almost hear the squawk from the bird! I see an intrepid explorer about to start discussions with the native Americans.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: I love to hear Ravens talk!
You are right about that guy... smile

What’s he crowing on about?
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: He had something in his mouth that he stashed in the tree... perhaps he was calling to his wife to come get dinner! smile

Bonne journée
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you, Claudine!
Good shots, Ell'. I look like I've just seen the room prices! smile
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thanks, Frank!
Ha! Possibly! smile
I think the first shot is my favorite ever shot of yours, Elizabeth. As a person with a nook of crow and raven paintings, I would put this in it. Likey! The rest are good too, of course.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Gosh, thanks so much, Mary! What an honor! I do love the Corvids. One of Dr Terry Vaughan's (my beloved ex-husband's father... forever my surrogate Dad, who is a well known vertebrate biologist) former students, John Marzluff, who is now a professor at the U of Washington... wrote "In the Company of Crows and Ravens". He's long studied the intelligence of Corvids. This is a very good TedTalk:

I particular like the top picture - what a wonderful backdrop he has to sing to!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you very much, Anne! I can't imagine a happier bird!
Another fine set of pictures, I rather like Frank's hat, he looks very dapper.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you, Brian! I love that hat, too! It's a Stetson... we looked long and hard for just the right one!
That looks like a raven.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Indeed it is, our very large species.

Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: I appreciate you checking back on this image, Astrid! The one in the hat is my favorite! smile If you have time.... check Thursday's too... something a little unusual you might like!
