Billy Bob on his 94th Birthday

Frank and I were honored, once again, to have been invited to,

and to photograph Billy Bob's Birthday Roping Competition.

Blind in one eye - can't see out of the other, (really!), his

doctor asked him how he ropes.  He replied, "Well, I see

three shadows out there, and I just aim for the middle one"

Wayne (the host) said (with a very Sam Elliott drawl),

"Ya know Billy Bob, I can put a bell on the steer so you can

hear where he's at...".     Billy Bob:  "That don't do me no good,

Wayne.  I can't hear neither!".  Gotta love these good old boys!

So you're in for a week of cowboys, cowgirls, ponies and steer!

Lovely animals!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Two legged and four! smile
Billy Bob's horse, Buck, is a really smart, beautiful animal - he does most of the work for Billy Bob! Most of these quarter horses know their jobs well and scarcely need any instruction. You can always see their ears turned back toward the riders - listening for any verbal commands.

An inspiring story and fabulous captures. My mom is 96 and 'rides' a walker!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you, Bonnie! He's something else! Can't see, can't walk, but man - can he ride! smile You're mom is doing fantastic!!!

Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: He's something else, Lisl! A real inspiration!

I have the feeling that somehow I will not be doing this at age ninety four!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: I'm not sure I want to be alive at ninety four! smile

Hahaha!! Good for him. I wonder if they choose a docile stereo for him? probably not! I'm looking forward to seeing Frand;s attempt; what day will that be? wink
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Funny you ask... the ones we knew to be fast or spunky, would just be let through the chute with one excuse or another!
Frank would love to ride, but we've got to get him over his fear first! smile

Oh, I admire this good old boy, but I don't want to be the bull.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Me too, Philine!
I feel for the steer sometimes too - but they really are well taken care of. Their head dressing protects them from rope burns, and they are released very quickly - they then trot off to drink some water and eat some hay!

It is sort of unthinkable that he can sit a saddle like that at his age and handle pull aways and stops. Must be very strong in torso and legs. Great pictures, though.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Well, he can barely see, and can hardly walk - but get him on a horse and wow! Thank you, Louis!

Amazing that he can be in such rare form given the obstacles he overcomes!! Great action shots!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: As they say.... "Old cowboys never die... " smile Thanks so much, Steven!
This guy is what we over here refer to as a 'bit of a character', fancy being able to do that at 94.
What a character. Good for you and Frank.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Oh he is! Thank you, Mary!
