First Place - People

I got brave and entered five photos into the

Coconino County Fair Photo Competition.

Of my five entries, I received two first

place ribbons, and two second place

ribbons for their categories.

This was another that was difficult because

Annette was not just posing for me... she was

actively performing in Heritage Square.  So she

was moving around and the background was crap -

speakers, posters, spectators... but I somehow

caught this gorgeous expression with just the

shadow of the fire escape behind her!  Lucky!!

Excellent image Elizabeth, IMHO this would have done well in my clubs competition yesterday evening. BTW did you and Frank know about this http://www.flagstaffphotographyclub.com/
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Thank you so much, Brian! I really appreciate this compliment from you!
I actually belonged to the club for a year... and Jody Tanner is a friend of mine. There are a few really good photographers in that club!

I believe her half hidden face and sort of coy smile added impetus to the judges' decision. So did the background.

Come competition time, the judges don't feel a thing for the difficult circumstances that you had to handle. That said, had she posed for you in a studio (mono colour background), the result would have been bleak. I believe the diagonal of the stairs is another positive contribution.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: You could be right - it does help when the subject is so charming! smile

I think you so much for the constructive comment, Louis!

Oh well done to exclude the distracting background. In this case, the shadow of the escape adds to the imagine and Annette's clothes. Was this image successful?
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: I just got lucky at that moment, Alan! I agree, the shadow does add a little something. This was first place winner for the "People" category!
You've got to have some luck in that situation!
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: Definitely!
If it is live dance, movement is preferred and expected, I would think.
Elizabeth Croston Buckalew: I did get several shots with some nice motion blur... but at this moment - I'm glad I had a high shutter speed to capture that expression!
